Nepali phrases
List will be updated as I learn more phrases. Phrases typical of daily conversation with some random words.
General greetings:
(Tapaiilai) Kasto Cha - How are you?)
(Malai) Thik Cha - I'm fine, thank you!
Dhanyabhad - Thank you
Tapaiiko naam ke ho - What is your name?
Mero naam ____ ho - My name is_____
Subra prabhat - Good morning (bihana - morning)
Subra sandhya - Good evening (beluka - evening)
Subra raatri - Good night (raatri - night)
Kati bhajyo - What time is it?
Hajur - (general purpose term: what? excuse me? pardon? etc)
Maaph garnuhos - Excuse me/sorry
Maile bhujhina - I don't understand
Maile bhujhe - I understand
Verb bases:
Janu - To go
Aunu - To come
Basnu - To sit
Khaanu - To eat
1. Polite usage: add "s" at end i.e. "khaanus - please eat"
2. Negative: add "na" at beginning i.e. "najanu - don't go"
3. First person action: drop "u" and add "choo" at end, add "ma" at beginning i.e. "ma janchoo - I am going"
4. Respectful past tense (not 1st person) add "bhaiyo" after base i.e. "aunu bhaiyo - (someone) came"
Addressing people:
Kasturi-ji - Formal way to address Kasturi
Aama/Buwa - Father/Mother
Didi/Bahini - Older/Younger sister
Dhai/Bhai - Older/Younger brother
Nanu/Babu - Young girl/boy (I kept on hearing "babu" in the family, now I know why...)
Ma/Hami - I/We
Tapaii/Tim - You
Yo/Tyo - This/That
Adjectives:
Mahango/Sasto - Expensive/Cheap
Ramro/Naramro - Good/Bad (Note: add "na" in front of a word to make it negative)
Thada/Najik - Far/Close
Sapha/Phohar - Clean/Dirty
Thulo/Sano - Big/Small
Sajilo/Gahro - Easy/Hard
Tato/Cheeso - Hot/Cold (food)
Garmi/Jaado - Hot/Cold (weather)
Question words:
Ke - What
Ko - Who
Kina/Kinabhane - Why
Kahaang - Where

Kati - How much (i.e. yo kati ho? - How much is this?)
